Cosmetics Chemicals and Breast Cancer

Pink-Ribbon Cosmetics

Pink CosmeticsPinkwashing: A term used to describe companies that position themselves as leaders in the fight against breast cancer while engaging in practices that may be contributing to rising rates of the disease.

When only 1 in 10 cases of breast cancer are linked to family history, when so many more women are diagnosed today than even 20 years ago, and when science implicates our environment in rising rates of the disease, we have to ask hard questions about the toxic chemicals we’re exposed to daily. In cosmetics alone – with and without the pink ribbon – we find:
Parabens: preservatives used in lotions, shampoo and other cosmetics. Some parabens are classified as endocrine disruptors because they mimic estrogen in the body. Higher estrogen exposures are linked to higher risk of breast cancer.
Phthalates: plasticizers found in nail polish, synthetic fragrance and plastic packaging. These hormone-disrupting chemicals have been linked to early puberty in girls, a risk factor for later-life breast cancer. Some phthalates also act as weak estrogens in cell culture systems.
Fragrance: secret mixtures of chemicals used in both perfumes and scented cosmetics. "Fragrance" may include phthalates, synthetic musks (which may disrupt hormones) andethylene oxide (a mammary carcinogen). The companies are not required to list these chemicals on product labels.
Nonylphenols: used in some cleansers. They have been shown to disrupt hormones.
Sunscreen chemicals: some behave like estrogens and have been shown to make some breast cancer cells proliferate.
Isobutane: a propellant used in spray-on hair spray, gel, mousse, shaving cream and anti-fungal treatment. It can be contaminated with 1,3-butadiene, a probable human carcinogen and a mammary carcinogen.
Ethoxylated compounds: dimethicone, PEG-40, ceteareth-12 and other compounds with the syllables “eth” or “PEG” in them are used in a wide variety of cosmetics. These compounds are formed by processing with ethylene oxide, a mammary carcinogen, and can be contaminated with 1,4-dioxane, also a mammary carcinogen.
Metals: found in a variety of cosmetics as colorants, sunscreens or contaminants. Iron, nickel, chromium, zinc, cadmium, mercury and lead have been found in higher levels in women with breast cancer than in women without breast cancer. Nickel, chromium, cadmium, mercury, lead, copper, cobalt and tin also have estrogenic effects on breast cancer cells in the lab.
Petrolatum: a derivative of petroleum used in lip products and lotions. It can be contaminated with polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), which are both endocrine disruptors and carcinogens.
Toluene: used in some nail products. Can be contaminated with benzene, a known carcinogen.

Triclosan: commonly used in anti-microbial soaps. More research is needed to understand how triclosan relates to breast cancer, but evidence suggests it affects male and female hormones as well as thyroid hormone, which effects weight and metabolism.

AFA Clay Peel™ patented Amino Acid (AFA)

The patented Amino Acid (AFA) in the Clay Peel™ produces amazing results.

The AFAs used in the Clay Peel™  are the same amino acids which make up the main moisture retention system of human skin.

The AFA Clay Peel™ is a simple, two-step non surgical procedure that will immediately create smoother, softer and tighter skin after the first treatment.

The treatment is fast, simple and requires no down time. A series of 4-6 treatments is usually recommended.

The mask draws out impurities and opens up the pores in the skin. This prepares the skin to get the maximum benefits of the peel step. The results are immediate and dramatic. Your skin will feel smoother, softer and tighter after the first application. Over a series of treatments, improvements will occur with fine lines, rough skin, and pigment irregularities.

Clear Skin Diet

By Alan C Logan

While acne has long been a problem for adolescents, in recent decades - the last fifty years specifically - acne has been on the rise among adults as well, particularly among women. Many scientists have traced his upsurge to changes in the dietary habits of North Americans. The Clear Skin Diet is designed to help those who suffer from acne to understand: What it is Why they have it What it has to do with their eating habits And what they can do to prevent it or lessen its impact Modern research shows: That there is a strong causal connection between certain kinds of foods and acne.

That certain fats, such as omega-3 fatty acids, protect against acne, while others, saturated or trans fats, can promote acne by increasing the level of inflammation and oxidative stress in the skin. Culinary herbs like ginger and turmeric are known to dampen acne breakouts.

These same dietary stresses also influence the level of the hormones that cause acne. While fruits and vegetables, green tea, soy, fish, berries, and fiber-rich whole foods lessen these androgens, meat and milk promote these acne-related hormones, as do sugar and low-fiber carbohydrates. There also is a strong causal connection between the brain and the skin. When a person experiences anxiety and depression, acne-producing hormones are released, which can lead to poor dietary choices high in saturated fats and sugars.

The Clear Skin Diet introduces the acne diet and lifestyle. Dietary requirements for protecting the skin are listed - along with suggested food supplements when they cannot be easily met - and summarized, as well as mind-body medical interventions that can influence acne hormones and lessen their impact. Also included are 50 acne-preventive recipes, along with information on how one can locate the ingredients that are not readily available in most grocery stores.

Consumers See Thousands More Product Choices with Reduced Calories, Fats, Sugar and Sodium, Industry Survey Shows

2014 Update to GMA Health and Wellness Surveys Finds that Food and Beverage Companies Have Introduced More Than 30,000 Healthier Product Choices

- More than 30,000 healthier product choices have been made available to consumers between 2002 and 2013 according to the 2014 Health & Wellness Survey released today by the Grocery Manufacturers Association (GMA).  The new choices represent an additional 10,000 in just the last four years.

"Consumers want to eat better and they want to do so in a way that fits their lifestyles. The 2014 GMA Health & Wellness Survey demonstrates that the industry has responded to this need in a significant way. America's food and beverage companies have made available to consumers thousands of new and reformulated product choices that are less in calories, fats, sugar and sodium to help them build healthy diets for themselves and their families," said GMA President and CEO Pamela G. Bailey.
The 2014 GMA Health & Wellness Survey data was collected and analyzed by Georgetown Economic Services.  Sixty-nine companies, representing more than half of U.S. food and beverage sales, have shared data for the survey since 2002.
Food and beverage companies reported that they collectively have:
  • Eliminated or reduced trans fat in more than 11,000 product choices
  • Eliminated or reduced saturated fat in more than 8,000 product choices
  • Reduced sugar/carbohydrates in more than 5,500 product choices
  • Reduced the calorie content of more than 5,500 product choices
  • Reduced sodium in more than 6,500 product choices
Additional survey highlights include:
  • 94 percent of participant companies are promoting healthy eating and active living to consumers through a variety of channels, including websites and front-of-pack labeling such as Facts Up Front.
  • 46 percent of companies have introduced single-serve packaging to help consumers manage their caloric intake.
  • Since 2002, food and beverage companies have spent more than $300 million in nutrition and health-related activities and grants to communities.
  • 72 percent of participant companies partner with public health organizations.
"GMA is proud of its member companies and the industry for its ongoing commitment to help Americans lead healthier lives.  Together, we are providing consumers with the products, tools and information they need to construct a healthy diet and lead a more active lifestyle," concluded Bailey.

4 things your fingernails can tell you about your health.

shutterstock_114537763http://www.medicaldaily.com/nailed-it-4-health-signs-you-can-learn-just-looking-your-fingernails-281556

Lack of Oxygen in Blood

Cyanosis, or the lack of oxygen in blood, can be easily spotted by its tendency to turn an individual’s nails a bluish tint. Red blood cells carry oxygen to the body's tissues and usually have a pink coloring. When the blood loses oxygen, it can turn a dark-bluish red and causes an individual’s skin and nails to take on a blue hue. Cyanosis is often indicative of lung problems and occurs when there are blood clots in the lungs, at high altitudes, in bronchiolitis, CODP, severe pneumonia, and a number of other lung-relatedconditions.

Nutritional Deficiencies

Koilonychia is a condition that causes the nails to become indented and curve inward like a spoon. It can indicate that either the body has too much iron (haemochromatosis) or too little iron (anemia). Pale, whitish-colored nails are also a common symton of anemia. Individuals suffering from malnutrition may also experience thin, brittle nails. Ridges along the nails can indicate an array of nutritional problems including iron, folic acid, and protein deficiency.
